Our Species and Technology at a Crossroads: Speaking Summary

Jim’s talks have ranged from the keynote at the Propel Energy Conference in February 2018, to the keynote at The City of St. Albert’s Innovation Summit through to the keynote at PwC’s annual partners conference in Banff to over 450 senior partners and practitioners in the Canada. He recently spoke at the Graduate Engineering annual conference for Schulich School at University of Calgary and the Undergraduate Computer Science Conference in July.

Jim spoke at this June’s Inventure$ conference in Calgary and as a keynote at the Canadian Venture Capital forum in Halifax. Jim was one of the feature speakers along with the Ambassador to Canada, Rex Murphy and former Bank of Canada Governor David Dodge at 2018 prestigious Lake Louise Business Forum on the future of technology and our species. In San Francisco, Jim went to the heart of Silicon Valley to remind 1,000 of the top start-ups, venture capitalists and corporate attendees on the need to pay attention to the responsibility of technology leadership.

In his talks, Jim connects his personal journey as a technology entrepreneur and many of the real, human experiences of his past 30 years to the impacts of technology and change. His book, Tip of the Spear: Our Species and Technology at a Crossroads is the product of this life’s work and drives the talk.

A witty and impactful storyteller, Jim’s talk brings the audience into the future by providing a clear-eyed and experience-based philosophical view of the challenges we face as a species. He looks at the question, “Just because we can, does it mean we should?”, straight-on and challenges us to match the great possibilities of future “things” with an equal effort in the Innovation of Ways.

Jim’s overview of the book and his talk can be found in the video on his YouTube channel.
